Why I Write Songs

When I started writing songs, the songwriters of my youth acted as mirrors, held up to my own fragile being. They inspired me to express myself through the writing and singing of songs. Music gives me a telescope through which I view Life, close at hand, or at a great distance. Everything, even the most seemingly insignificant occurrence or feeling, can be given great import by the turn of a phrase or the manipulation of vocal chords. My demons, my dreams, my triumphs, my despair. I lay them out on a carpet of simple yet intricate design. If you listen to my music, you shall know me.

The Beatles hit the shores of America and we became screamers. Every teenaged girl screamed, and even some of the boys. We screamed when Paul sang Yesterday. We screamed when Ringo pouted at us from behind his drum kit. We screamed all the way through Love Me Do. The harmonies, the haircuts, the Liverpool accents. I bought my first LP and my first guitar, with my birthday and babysitting money. It was a Martin D35. I wrote my first song, and although I cannot recall the song itself, I do remember that while I was singing it, I became the fifth Beatle.
